Politics and influence

Residents in Köping choose in the general elections held every four years the politicians who will guide the municipality. The Municipal Council is the municipality's highest decision-making body, "the municipal parliament". It is here that the political objectives of the community are determined. The council makes decisions, for instance, about which fees will apply and how the budget should be allocated. The Municipal Council chooses those that will sit in the municipality's executive board of directors and various committees.
The Municipal Council consists of 49 members and the seats are distributed as follows:
Social Democrats (22), Moderates (9), Left Party (4), Center Party (4), Liberals (3), Christian Democrats (2), Green Party (2) and Swedish Democrats (3).
The Municipal Executive Board has 13 members and can be likened to the municipal government. The Board has overall responsibility for command and control of communal activities. The board is responsible for the implementation, amongst other things, of town council decisions, the preparation of cases and is also responsible for the strategic development and coordination of all municipal activities.
